Understanding & Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Using Kinesiology

Jan 11, 2024

Diving into our beliefs is an inevitable part of a self-discovery process. It plays a crucial role in self-empowerment, enabling us to reshape our story, liberate ourselves from limitations, and craft a reality that resonates with our true, authentic selves.

Here I aim to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of beliefs — what they are, how they take shape, and the crucial importance of shedding light on our subconscious convictions. Moreover, I will unveil the potential of kinesiology and muscle testing as direct tools in the quest to unearth and dissolve limiting beliefs.

| DEFINING BELIEFS

A belief is something that we believe to be true about ourselves, others or the world.

Beliefs can encompass a wide range of ideas, values, opinions, or convictions about various aspects of life, including religious, philosophical, political, and personal matters.

Beliefs act as as filters through which we interpret and make sense of the world around us, therefore being invisible architects of our reality, playing a profound role in shaping our worldview, thoughts, actions, and ultimately, our lives.

What we believe, we become.

If we hold empowering beliefs that are positive, support personal growth, self-confidence, and a positive outlook on life, we are more likely to take on challenges, learn from experience, believe in our ability and actively work towards our goals.

On the other hand, limiting beliefs negative, restrictive beliefs that can create self-imposed barriers, hindering our potential and limiting the possibilities we see for ourselves. Limiting beliefs can create self-doubt, fear, and a sense of incapacity, preventing individuals from reaching their full potential.

We all have limiting beliefs, some are known to us, the others unknown and buried in our subconscious mind.

| KEYS ASPECTS OF THE MIND

WHAT YOU KNOW - THE CONSCIOUS MIND

The conscious mind is the logical, thinking or analytical part of our mind. It allows us to set goals and navigate through life.

The notion of past and future only exist in our conscious mind.

WHAT IS HIDDEN FROM YOU - THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

The subconscious is part of the mind of which one is not fully aware of but which influences one's actions and feelings.

It is the realm of our automatic and habitual thought patterns and beliefs.

The body functions like heart rate; breathing; digestion; our learned body movements like riding a bicycle; driving a car; and all other habitual activities we do happens without us having to consciously think about it.

Some characteristics of the subconscious mind:

  • The subconscious is always in the “now” (as opposed to the conscious mind that can integrate the notion of past and future). It communicates with you via emotions and dreams.

  • The subconscious mind cannot differentiate real events versus imaginary ones. Everything that you see, in real life or on a screen, imagine or dream is considered real by the subconscious mind. If you live a scary event you can become terrified but you can also become terrified just by imagining it.

  • The subconscious mind cannot process negative words. Let's experience something right now. I invite you to close your eyes & try not to think about a pink elephant. Did it work? I'm pretty sure the first image that flashed across your mind, was a pink elephant, even if only for a millisecond. Negative commands like “don’t” are not processed by the subconscious mind (this is the reason why during a kinesiology session goals are set up around a positive statement).

  • The subconscious mind will always gravitate to what it knows. Unknowns are seen as scary to the subconscious mind, because it cannot calculate a known outcome with an unknown variable. Being habitual, the subconscious mind is typically resistant to change through normal conscious processes. This is why it takes time to rewire habits and behaviours even if those are detrimental to you.

| THE BIRTH OF LIMITING BELIEFS

Most of our habits and emotional conditioning were programmed during the first seven years of our life, usually by our early experiences and interactions with our parents, teachers, peers, TV, etc.

By watching people around us and interacting with them, we learnt how to function in society, what we think we can do and what we cannot, what it takes to make money.

On a deeper level we also registered, what happens when we are happy or angry, how best to express love, when it’s safe to laugh, to sing, to shine… and when it’s not.

Consider this real life scenario: Growing up as a child, you use to sing, laugh, dance, jump around, play.

Your parents were strict and didn't really like being surrounded by noise.

One day your father really got upset for no apparent reasons and you got in trouble.

As a child you would have felt confused, scared, rejected. Not understanding what was happening and without the ability to get a proper perspective at that age, your mind decided to make sense of this event and internalised the belief of: "there is something wrong with me" or "It is not safe to be me".

In order to not feel this way again, protect yourself from being hurt you then stopped showing this side of you. You stopped being spontaneous, playful.

Our brains wires through association. When we repeatedly engage in a particular behaviour, think a certain thought, or experience a specific situation, the neurons involved in these activities strengthen their connections.

If this scenario continually repeated itself or was reinforced by other sources, over time, it solidified as a truth within you and became wired into your nervous system.

In the given example, any potential situation where you might consider showing up authentically has now become associated with a sense of threat. This learned response becomes deeply ingrained, shaping your subconscious reactions and influencing your behaviour.

This early childhood experience if not properly integrated and released, could be the very reason why showing yourself, being authentic in relationships may trigger so much anxiety (because the brain has perceived them as being similar).

This really help you understand that most often you are not reacting to your current situation but to the past!!!

Your beliefs deeply shape your reality.

Some other examples of common limiting beliefs are:

“I need to be perfect in order to be loved”,

“I must not be like my mum”,

“I am not good enough”,

”life is a struggle”.

We will adapt our behaviour in order to achieve feeling a certain way or not feeling another. As a result we may become “over-achievers”, display addictive or avoidance behaviour.

Doing so limits our possibilities, constrains the expression of our authentic deeper selves and our vision of the world. We may feel “stressed”, “stuck” or “dissatisfied” and might drive ourselves to the ground, which may also negatively impact our health.

| HOW KINESIOLOGY CAN HELP YOU REWIRE YOUR BELIEFS

Kinesiology is very powerful energy medicine that allows us to tap into the wisdom of our organ of truth - our body!

Our body (and energy system) never lies to us. It stores all the memories of everything that ever happened to us and beyond (womb, past line, ancestors lines)!

Therefore, it keeps track of all the events we have ever been through including the emotions, past hurt, and traumas that may have been repressed.

Kinesiology provides a unique approach to uncovering and transforming limiting beliefs. Through muscle monitoring and targeted questioning, we can directly access the subconscious mind, unveiling hidden programs and their origins.

Bringing awareness to these beliefs, realising that we have been running them, in other words bringing them from an unconscious state to a conscious, is the first step to change.

What sets Kinesiology apart is its holistic approach. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it acknowledges the intricate mind-body-spirit connection. When a limiting belief is uncovered, we address not only the thought itself (the mind) but also the emotional charge and fear response embedded in our bodies and nervous system.

In my practice, I integrate various modalities, including energy work, acupressure utilizing the meridian system, and mindset techniques. This synergistic approach aims not only to desensitize old, limiting beliefs but also to facilitate the integration of new, empowering ones.

Beyond the immediate goal of shifting your narrative, for some this approach extends into a deeper understanding – a realisation that shifting these beliefs is an integral part of your life's journey towards evolution and growth, ultimately guiding you closer to your purpose.

| EXPLORE YOUR BELIEF SYSTEM

If you want to explore your belief system and identify if it is in the way of you realising your goals and aspiration, a good place to start is to ask yourself:

- What do I remember my parent(s) saying to me as a child about work, money, weight, showing emotions?

- What beliefs do they have that I probably absorbed as child?

Another way is to listen to your self-talk, that inner voice that is talking to you all day, and just write down whatever comes up.
